The big news during AJC ACCESS’s recent fourth trip to the city was that the homeless people camped outside of Mayor Nagin’s office would be evicted shortly. They were given notice - how humane!

SDEROT, ISRAEL – This small town of 20,000, located within walking distance of Israel’s southern border with the Gaza Strip, should be on everyone’s mind. As things go in Sderot, so they will go in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And, for all who truly desire peace, what’s happening to Sderot, and how the predicament of its residents has been virtually ignored, gives scant hope. The international community ought to be paying closer attention.

Sderot, and other communities in the western Negev region of Israel, has been the target of some 2,400 rockets since the beginning of 2007, and thousands more since 2000, launched by Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. That’s about one rocket every three and a half hours over the last year, targeting almost exclusively civilians. Imagine trying to live, raise children, conduct normal civilian activities under these conditions.

Last week in Washington, the price of oil reached a record high of $160 a barrel. In response to a series of world events unfolding over the past several months –– civil unrest and loss of local oil production in Nigeria, explosions in a pipeline in Azerbaijan and a cut in oil production by Venezuela and Iran – all contributed to world oil production to drop by one percent. This was enough to send oil prices rocketing, with serious consequences for the American and global economies.

Luckily, this scenario was part of fictional role-playing game, simulating a White House Cabinet meeting called to address the oil crisis. The mock Cabinet took into account several feasible events, and attempted to address the situation by suggesting a national speed limit of 55 miles-per-hour, restricting Sunday driving, rationing gasoline and dipping into the National Petroleum Reserve. The event was organized by the bipartisan group Securing America’s Future Energy and stressed the vulnerability of the U.S. economy to shocks in oil price.

As we celebrate Hanukkah in our homes, Congress prepares to pass a bill that would help us conserve another kind of oil –– the thick petroleum extracted from the depths of the earth. Similar to the olive oil the Maccabbes discovered, today we have a chance of making a given amount of petroleum last longer –– this time by means of efficiency standards.

According to the New York Times article, “Challenging tradition, young Jews worship on their own terms,” as well as anecdotal evidence, religion appears to play a stronger role in connecting American Jews in their 20’s and 30’s to Judaism than in previous generations.

American Jews like me whose commitment to the Jewish people stems from a cultural/nationalistic/ethical affiliation are a dying breed. I am concerned that this trend will adversely affect secular Jewish organizations. Can any strategic action be taken to postpone, much less prevent, this inevitable shift, thereby preserving the tradition of Jewish political advocacy as an attractive affiliation option?

Eight years ago, Mauritania became the third Arab country to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel. This momentous action occurred without fanfare, and even today is not as widely known as it ought to be.

The other two, Egypt and Jordan, signed peace treaties with Israel in 1979 and 1994, respectively, and shortly thereafter opened embassies and exchanged ambassadors. These challenged the longstanding conviction among Arab leaders that diplomatic ties with Israel would be established only in the context of a full Israeli-Palestinian peace. But, bordering Israel, and having engaged in costly warfare, Egypt and Jordan proceeded without waiting for a resolution of the Palestinian situation, which has held Arab-Israeli relations virtually hostage for 60 years.

Israel’s upcoming 60th birthday provides a great opportunity to take a step back from the day to day and assess the bigger picture.

It’s easy to be drawn into a pessimistic outlook about Israel’s future. There’s plenty of evidence to support such gloominess: much of the Arab world’s continuing rejection of the Jewish State’s right to exist; the rising tide of Muslim extremism; the menacing threat of Iran; the growing social, economic and religious cracks within Israeli society.

These problems are all very real and must be taken seriously. But they only tell part of the story, and can dangerously obscure our view of the larger, more positive portrait of Israel’s remarkable achievements. Such “we’re doomed” pessimism is dangerous, for it can skew our vision, sap our resolve, and wind up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Why must doing the right thing be such a costly enterprise?

Looking for a new car, a hybrid vehicle seems a natural choice. Saving significantly on gas, I figure, would be good for my personal economics, while contributing to reducing our nation’s dependence on imported oil and helping to improve the environment.

So eager was I to join the hybrid wave, I walked into a Honda dealer two years ago and put down a $500 deposit to become one of the first to buy the new hybrid Accord. The fact that it would cost about $5,000 more than the standard Accord model did not, at first, dampen my enthusiasm.

As I awaited the call alerting me that the car had arrived at the dealership, I paused to consider how long it would take for any reduction in gasoline usage to compensate for the premium affixed to the purchase price. It did not add up.

Just below the radar screen, an important date is fast approaching.

From November 5 to 8, representatives of the 186-member-nation INTERPOL, the Lyon-based international police organization, will gather in Marrakech, Morocco, for their annual General Assembly. Normally, the event doesn’t make headlines, but this time could be different.

The story begins in July 1994. The building of the AMIA, the central welfare body of Argentine Jewry, was reduced to rubble in a terrorist attack. Eighty-five people were killed; many more were injured. (Two years earlier, another terrorist attack in Buenos Aires had targeted the Israeli embassy, killing twenty-nine people.)
